The Long Game Starts Here
Part III of The Checkmate Strategy applies the Four Moves through six practical programmes and forty-two lessons. This is where the lesson series begins.
September feels like the right moment to start something.
There is something about the end of summer — the return of structure, the sense of a new term beginning — that makes reflection feel more natural than it does in the middle of a busy season. The things that were deferred, the decisions that were postponed, the questions that were easier to set aside when the pace was relentless — they tend to surface again in September.
This series is for that moment.
What the Lesson Series Is
Part III of The Checkmate Strategy contains six programmes and forty-two lessons. Each programme addresses a specific situation that leaders, founders and senior professionals recognise from the inside — not a theoretical challenge but a lived one. Each lesson contains a principle, a question for reflection and a practical move.
From next week, one lesson per week will be shared here — drawn from the programmes in sequence, beginning with Programme 1.
You do not need to have read the book to benefit from the series. But if a particular lesson resonates, the book will give you the full context around it.
The Six Situations
Before Lesson 1 arrives next week, read through the six programme situations below. Identify the one that most accurately describes where you are right now — not where you think you should be, but where you actually are.
Programme 1 — When the pace has outrun the purpose
The work is continuing. The outputs are there. But something essential is being quietly crowded out and the direction has become less clear than it once was.
Programme 2 — When the stakes are high and judgment is under pressure
A significant decision is required. The information is incomplete. The consequences are real. And the quality of the thinking that goes into the decision will matter long after the moment has passed.
Programme 3 — When the work is right but the strain is constant
The work itself is meaningful and the commitment is genuine. But the pace has become unsustainable and recovery no longer restores what the effort removes.
Programme 4 — When success begins to cost more than it returns
By most external measures things are going well. But something about the way success is currently defined — or the price being paid for it — no longer feels right.
Programme 5 — When the decision cannot wait and nothing is certain
The situation demands a decision before clarity has fully arrived. Waiting for certainty is not an option. The discipline required is not confidence but judgment.
Programme 6 — The long game — holding all four moves under real conditions
This is not a single situation but a sustained one. The question is not which move is needed but whether all four are being held together — and what is currently carrying more weight than it should.
Before Next Week
You do not need to do anything with this yet. But between now and Lesson 1 next week, sit with the question the diagnostic raises.
Which of those six situations is most alive for you right now?
Not the one that has been true in the past. Not the one you expect to face in the future. The one that is present right now — the situation you would most recognise from the inside if you were honest about it.
Lesson 1 comes from Programme 1. If that is your situation, it will arrive at exactly the right moment. If a different programme describes you more accurately, note it — the series will get there. And the book has all six available now if you need them sooner.
Which of the six situations above most accurately describes where you are right now?
The lesson series begins next Wednesday. Subscribe below to receive it directly.
